(Glenn) Today we slept a little bit later and then headed for our next night's stop in Fortuna, California. We went about an hour out of our way to be sure we picked up the Pacific Coast Highway (HY 101) about where we had left it around Coos Bay. I did not want to miss anything along the coast of Oregon. The winding roads around the coast were nice and the coastline is so different than what we are used to along the gulf coast. Steep cliffs in some areas and large rocks off the coastline with heavy surf hitting the rocks. Beautiful scenery but the beaches (sand) is not as nice as the sugar sands we have at the gulf coast. The weather has been in the upper 60's. We visited the Redwood National Forest and enjoyed slowing down a little for another picnic. We threw our chairs out in the redwood forest and relaxed before we continued to our hotel. We went to a restaurant next door to our hotel and spoke for a long time to a local person (Jesse) that works for Kawasaki, who gave us suggestions on things to see in the area. Tomorrow we leave to Sonoma where we plan to spend the next four nights in wine country.
(Cathy) We were seranaded by a couple of bicyclers in the woods behind our picnic in the redwood forest, they played the drums and guitar and sang. Almost romantic. We are at a Super 8 tonight, it is quite nice. A lot of firemen are staying here also, lots of fires in California. Jesse said not to get too far off a main road in the forest, this is where the Mexican cartels grow their marijuana. BIG business here.
