(Glenn) Today I experienced one of the most scenic rides of my life. We have been cruising the entire Pacific coast roadway and I have enjoyed all of it. But today we rode over 100 miles from Carmel on Highway 1 passing through Big Sur. So many winding miles of cliffs, rocks, and crashing surf. We stopped at one viewing area and watched dozens of elephant seals on the shore. The temperature was about 65-70 degrees and very pleasant. We stopped to tour Hurst Castle built by William Randolph Hurst. Great views from the house and we enjoyed the tour, but the house was almost too large and over the top. He was a big art collector and much of his collection is still on display. After we left the castle, we found an uncrowded overlook of San Simeon Bay and setup for nice picnic. We are staying in San Luis Obispo for two nights to rest and catch up on washing clothes before heading to Disneyland. Get ready Mickey...here we come.
(Cathy) Before leaving Carmel we drove by to see Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch. Lovely picnic today looking at the ocean. I didn't much care for the Hurst Castle, but the sitting areas and views there were fabulous. Carmel was one of our favorite areas. Carmel by the Sea houses do not have street addresses, each house has a name should ch as "Liv de Life". Pick up your mail at the post office. Tomorrow will be wash day for me.
Glenn had a good time feeding this little squirrel bread and guacamole flavored chips. It sat right beside us munching on his goodies.
Hurst Castle closed off all bathrooms because of draught. Put up port a potties. Not kidding. Almost all the parks and way out areas have had bathrooms... They were usually biodegradable ones but usually pretty good. I said "usually" "pretty good". Sometimes something is better than nothing.
