(Glenn) We spent the entire day touring the aircraft carrier USS Midway. It served from 1945 until it was decommissioned after Desert Storm in 1991. It was so much better than we had expected. We toured most all of the ship including the admirals quarters (where he directed much of the Desert Storm operations-war maps still in place) and the bridge area. Many aircraft were on display. The most interesting parts of the tour involved listening to the operations detail and some war stories from many Midway veterans who work as docents on the ship. We thought we could cover the ship in the morning (it opened at 10:00) but ended up staying for 6-7 hours. We had to leave at 4:15 to catch the last trolley heading toward our hotel. We were exhausted from covering most of the ship which included more stairways than I could count. There are so many teenage girls on the street tonight waiting for the Taylor Swift concert happening downtown. We have really enjoyed San Diego and considered staying a few more days. We plan to leave in the morning but will probably return here in the future.
(Cathy) We walked from our hotel to the ship. Gotta get that exercise in for the day. More stairs than I can count but I was so impressed. Unlike our USS Alabama, the Midway has not been stripped. You actually get to see actual military items. Would live to come back when they have normal temperatures. It's 6:41 pm and I am in for the night. Even if Glenn found me Taylor Swift tickets. Would love to see her but just couldn't budge.
